Learn the essential skills for using a sewing machine with this hands-on course. Designed for beginners, you'll gain practical knowledge of threading the machine, loading the bobbin, and using various functions like decorative stitches and the buttonhole feature. You'll also master machine maintenance and needle changes.
Throughout this course, you will:
- Identify the different parts of a sewing machine and understand their functions.
- Learn how to thread the machine, load the bobbin, and use decorative stitches like zigzag stitch for overlocking.
- Practice sewing straight lines, curves, and corners with confidence.
- Discover how to use the buttonhole function and change needles for different projects.
- Apply your skills to create a simple project, such as a drawstring bag or coaster

This course is for sewing beginners.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, you will need to be able to read and write in English at Entry Level 3 to get the most out of your learning.
What you will learn
You will learn to identify the different parts of a sewing machine, thread the machine, load the bobbin, and use decorative stitches, including the zigzag stitch for overlocking. You'll also learn how to use the buttonhole function, change needles, and perform basic machine maintenance. You will practice sewing straight lines, curves, and corners, with a focus on developing your machine sewing skills and applying them to create a drawstring bag, coaster, or another small project.

You will learn via presentations, practical activities, workbooks, group and paired activities and group discussions.

A notepad and a pen.

You can be referred to other creative qualifications at the college, such as Floristry and Graphic Design.
What we expect from you
You are required to attend every session. The minimum required attendance for this course is 85%. Anything below this attendance will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Manager and you may be withdrawn from the course and the outstanding course fees will still be payable.
