Who is this course for?
A functional skills maths course is great for anyone who needs practical math skills for daily life and work. This includes adults wanting to handle their finances better, employees looking to improve their job skills, and job seekers needing a math qualification. It's also helpful for learners who find traditional math hard and prefer a more practical approach.

What you will learn
At Level 1, you’ll start developing maths skills that are useful for work, study, and daily life. You’ll learn how to apply maths to solve real-world problems with more independence. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: Work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages, Carry out calculations using the four operations (+ – × ÷), Use ratios and proportions to compare quantities, Understand and use measurements in different contexts, Calculate area, perimeter, and volume, Interpret and draw tables, charts, and graphs, Use averages (mean, median, mode), Understand and use basic probability, Apply formulas to solve problems, Work with positive and negative numbers. This level is great for improving job prospects or preparing for further study, including Level 2 or vocational qualifications.

How you will learn
You will gain knowledge via presentations, demonstrations, group discussions, question and answer sessions and practical exercises.

What will you need to bring
We will provide handouts, resources and access to a MyMaths account. You will need to have pen and paper for additional notes.

How you will be assessed
At Entry Level 1, 2 and 3, you will complete a paper-based assessment. The test is made up of short, practical questions which is internally marked and externally quality assured by City and Guilds. At Level 1 and 2, you will take an externally marked assessment.

Where next?
Once you have completed the qualificiation, we'll support you in your next steps which could be Level 2. We will offer helpful information, advice, and guidance to point you toward other courses that match your goals and interests.

What we expect from you
You are required to attend every session. The minimum required attendance for this course is 85%. Anything below this attendance will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Manager and you may be withdrawn from the course and the outstanding course fees will still be payable.
