Description

ESOL courses are English language classes designed for people whose first language is not English. We support progression from Pre-Entry to Level 2. The courses are designed to help you cope with everyday life, such as helping you with your children, communicating with other people and services and helping you to get a job. You will practise English skills and develop your speaking and listening ability. Course fees and concessions are dependent on your location, immigration status and employment status. Please ask our Centre Support team for more information.  

Who is this course for?
Any learner whose English is not their main language and has very little or no knowledge of the language. Anyone who has been evaluated at Pre-Entry Level by an ESOL teacher during a PCI session.

Entry Requirements
Before the course, you will be required to sit an initial assessment with an ESOL teacher to determine your current level to ensure the course you attend is the most suitable level for you. Little or no previous knowledge of English is needed but you must be able to read and write in your native language.

What you will learn
During the course you will practise English skills and develop your grammar and vocabulary. You will be taught to recognise new words in basic sentences and simple texts. You will be able to identify letters of the alphabet and sounds. You will learn to identify signs and symbols as well as phrases and basic sentences in line with the RAPA process where your achievement will be acknowledged and recorded. You will learn to make friends, help your child with homework, talk to your doctor, child's teachers and neighbours, prepare for further or higher education and qualifications, The course will also include elements of functional skills English, to help towards employment skills. By attending and successfully completing the course you may gain a recognised qualification that is valued in the UK.

How you will learn
Learners will gain knowledge by reading and exploring a range of vocabulary and language, understand basic written information, participate in question and answer sessions and practical activities. A variety of materials are used, including course books, worksheets, internet, video/audio and everyday materials, such as newspapers, etc. Homework will be given and expected to be done and self-study is encouraged.

What will you need to bring
Notebook, pen and a dictionary (English, bilingual or both)

How you will be assessed
During the course, you will be assessed by teacher observation, class and individual feedback, practical exercises as well as quizzes. There will be plenty of practice to guide you and help you to achieve. At the end of the course, there will be a formal evaluation with the teacher.

Where next?
On completing this unit, you will be able to move onto the next units or the next level of study (Entry 1 Level) if you have gained confidence all the units for Pre-Entry.

What we expect from you
You are required to attend every session. The minimum required attendance for this course is 85%. Anything below this attendance will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Manager and you may be withdrawn from the course and the outstanding course fees will still be payable.
