Ready to get started with cake decorating? This practical three-week course will introduce you to the essential skills needed to work with sugarpaste and create a beautifully covered and decorated cake. You'll learn how to roll, lift, apply and smooth sugarpaste, before developing your skills through simple borders, textures and decorative techniques. In the final session, you'll bring everything together to create your own finished celebration cake.

What you will learn
Week 1 - Sugarpaste & Cake Covering: Getting Started
Learn the basics of working with sugarpaste, including rolling, lifting, applying and smoothing. You’ll practise covering an 8-inch cake dummy and learn how to achieve a smooth, neat finish.
Week 2 - Sugarpaste & Cake Covering: Building Your Skills
Develop your cake-covering skills and learn how to achieve cleaner edges and a more professional-looking finish. Explore borders, textures, simple patterns and decorative details that can be used to enhance your cake.
Week 3 - Sugarpaste & Cake Covering: Creative Cake Design
Bring your new skills together to create a complete decorated celebration cake. You’ll plan your colour scheme and decoration, combine different sugarpaste techniques and create a finished cake to take home.
How you will learn
You will gain knowledge via presentations, demonstrations, group discussions, question and answer sessions and practical exercises.

- 8-inch round cake dummy
- 10-inch round cake drum for practice
- Sugarpaste for Weeks 1 and 2
- Basic equipment for the sessions
For Week 3, you will need to bring:
- 8-inch round firm sponge cake, ready to decorate
- 10-inch round cake drum
- 1kg sugarpaste
How you will be assessed
Your tutor will provide valuable development feedback throughout the session.

What we expect from you
You are required to attend every session. The minimum required attendance for this course is 85%. Anything below this attendance will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Manager and you may be withdrawn from the course and the outstanding course fees will still be payable.
